Watch for
Emerald Ash Borer has been a major concern in the Midwest region of the united states. The boring insect was shipped into the United States from its homeland of native Asia in the summer of 2002.  The beetle was cargo shipped in accidentally in crates that reached the Detroit harbor.
Since its first introduction into our area the borer has laid claim to over 40 million ash trees in the Michigan area alone. It has become widespread and has reached as far east as West Virginia and as far west as Wisconsin.  Much of the spread is due to movement of firewood from the infected areas. Other possible movements include movement by vehicle or suspicious movement by people whom may benefit from the beetle being in the area. Hopefully it is not the latter of the two.
Emerald Ash Borer has gotten a lot of media attention and has been thoroughly researched to help from spreading the chaos that is effecting Michigan right now.  Minnesota alone has approximately 800 million ash trees alone that could be affected by the emerald ash borer once it reaches the area.
Though this beetle does not lay many larvae it has multiplied so much and it has been left untreated so its expansion is magnifying every year. It will not be long before the emerald ash borer is in our area.  Many different treatments are offered to the public to treat for emerald ash borer.  The only problem is that the chemical is not very effective and is very diluted when the public can use it.  The best possible treatment we have found is to inject into the trunk to kill off the larvae.
The beetle itself is fairly harmless mostly causing some defoliation and the holes in the bark witch are more cosmetic than anything.  The real pests are the larvae that grow to be much larger than the beetle and feed on the living part of the tree. It is said that the emerald ash borer can kill a tree in three years maximum of its first infecting a tree.
So here are some signs that your tree might have emerald ash borer.

  • Canopy is dying out in ash tree
  • D shaped entry holes
  • Visible larvae galleries (s-shapes where bark has come off
  • Growth sprouts from base of tree
  • Emerald ash borer adult beetles are present
Identify
Another disease that effects ash trees is called ash yellows.  It is very rare and signs of the disease are yellowing of the leaves with eventual die back of branches in all area. It is a fungus disease and can be treated if spotted quickly. If any of your trees leaves start turning yellow and it is spring or summer please call a professional.  This is often a fungus disease that can spread throughout a tree quickly and kill the entire tree. Here is what you should look for:
  • Yellowing of leaves in spring or summer
  • Die back of leaves in areas on tree (especially canopy)
  • Visible fungus growth on living tree

What does Arbor Doctor Do?

Arbor Doctor uses a method known as trunk injection.  This method is found to be 95% effective in field tests in Michigan forests.  The chemical is also backed by the USDA for its safety.

Trunk injections method is a primitive method using a drill to make holes in the trees and letting them take the chemical into the living area of the tree.  This method is the equivalence of getting a shot at the doctors office.  It also allows the tree to get all of the chemical it needs to stave off the dreaded emerald ash borer in the shortest period of time.
